Once & Future. More Like, Gran Helsing.

Once & Future 1 CoverOnce & Future #1 Review

It’s nice to see a Boom! Studios book on shelves getting some hype behind it. I don’t get to review Boom! Studios books enough, and Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora’s Once & Future is deserving of attention.

Kieron Gillen is no stranger to hype. We’re talking the co-creator of The Wicked + The Divine, Phonogram, and the latest hot book Die. So naturally team him up with the rad art of Dan Mora (Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Klaus) and you got yourself another pop indie hit.

Once & Future ReviewOnce & Future takes on King Arthur and the legend of Excalibur. The tales are always of Arthur uniting the Britons but never speak about the dark prophecy of his return. Someone has killed for Excalibur’s scabbard and is looking to fulfill such prophecy. Looks like it’s up to an absentminded academic named Duncan and his Grandma Bridgette to stop them. Gran’s been hiding her secret for long enough, and now she must share her monster hunting skills with her unsuspecting grandson. Together they’re putting together a tag team like Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, except it’s his grandma, there’s no Sylvester Stallone, and there’s mythical monsters.

The book is exciting and fun with easily lovable characters. Duncan’s Gran, who I’ll be calling Gran Helsing is a riot. Duncan is clumsy but he’s a beast who’s love for his grandma is adorable. They’re the duo you love to root for, although I have a feeling it’s the monsters who will need all the support. Once & Future is gonna be a book you’ll be begging for each week and we’ve only just caught a glimpse of what’s the to come.
