Avengers vs X-Men AvX VS #1 Review. The Side Battles

Avengers vs X-Men AvX VS #1 ReviewAvengers vs X-Men AvX VS #1 Review

Can I just start this out by asking the question that I’m sure is on everyone’s mind, is that really the title Marvel is going with? AvX: VS? That is the title right? But I will say that behind the bland unimaginative title and cover lies a great, great addition to an already exciting Avengers vs X-Men series. This 6 part “limited series” takes some of the side battles you got to see in the main Avengers vs X-Men storyline and pulls you right into the thick of those smaller skirmishes. The first issue of AvX: VS has The Invincible Iron Man taking on Magneto, and The Thing going punch for punch with Namor the Sub-Mariner. The writing by Jason Aaron is pretty entertaining and complimented well by the fantastic art of Adam Kubert. Every punch, blast, and hit with a treasure chest can be felt bounding right from the pages. Within every page Marvel also conveniently placed ingenious “AvX Fun Facts!” that let you know tidbits like “Each Utopia tower weighs 170 tons” and “The impact of Thing’s punch is equal to the force of a car at 52 mph”, each adding a little humor and trivia to the battles at hand.

Of course you aren’t going to see any hero die, or even actually lose for that matter. A victor is named, but it feels almost like Obi-Wan being struck down by Darth Vader. Was there really a winner? No. Bragging rights? More likely. That’s the way I feel all of the skirmishes are going to play out. But don’t let that discourage you from picking this book up, it’s a must buy in my opinion if you’re following the monumental Avengers vs X-Men event. I’m not going to spoil it for you, but I’ll hint that no one from the team with “Men” in the title wins. Troll.
