Saga Chapter 1 Review

March 14, 2012 By Burke 1 Comment

Brian k Vaughan, Saga, ComicsSaga Chapter 1 Review

Saga hit store shelves today, larger than life, and a lot of book for your buck.  IMAGE has big plans for this new series created by Fiona Staples and written by Brian K. Vaughan.  It was very interesting to find out that Staples designs, draws and colors every creature, spaceship and world for this book giving it a very personal and genuine feel.  Saga can be best described as a violent sci-fi  Romeo+Juliet fantasy romance of sorts.  The lovely couple you see on the front cover are Alana and Marko, destined to be together, yet part of a galaxy where their home worlds are in constant war with each other.  As you can imagine, the two factions don’t get a long (let alone mate!), and having a half bread child between the two is unheard of.  But, Alana and Marko’s love is brighter than the faded star that the planet Cleave orbits so now they’re on the run from their home factions who both want them dead.  It’s a helluva love story I tell ya, and it’s narrated very well by a much older Hazel (Alana and Marko’s half breed daughter).

Saga is a very well written story.  Conversations among characters don’t feel forced or unneeded and the action is paced well.  It’s like something you would see as an ongoing original series on the SyFy channel, except that it’s actually good.  Sorry for all of you who may like some of those shows, I do not partake.  I love the world that Staples has created, a world that’s part Bladerunner part Firefly, and all fantasy.  A fantasy filled with winged guards, retro TV faced robots, alligator butlers, large hairless cats who talk, and gigantic tortoise fortresses.  I dare you to say, “tortoise fortress” three times fast…see it’s fun, and so is this largely imaginative book.  All you sci-fi or fantasy lovers out there, Saga demands your attention, and I talked to Brian over at Cosmic Comics in Las Vegas and he assured me they have plenty of copies.  Don’t miss out, IMAGE is throwing it’s weight around for this great new series.  Oh, and yes, she is breast feeding on the front cover, so you have that to look forward to also.  First comic to display breast feeding on the cover?  Looked it up…yeup.

Hey here’s an IMAGE quick pick!
