Naomi #1. Small Town and Hidden Heroes.

NAOMI #1 is the newest character coming out of the DC Universe as part of their “Wonder Comics” series of books. The Wonder Comics will soon also include YOUNG JUSTICE, and another DIAL H FOR HERO with art from Joe Quinones. DC Comics is touting Naomi as “The biggest new mystery in the DC Universe…!”, which is naturally the draw of the book.

Superman makes a surprise appearance in a small town somewhere in middle America that has everyone talking. Nothing like this has ever happened there before… or has it? Naomi, our protagonist, has a hunch that it has. She just has to prove it.

naomi #1Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker helm the story of Naomi #1. Fitting as Bendis is also taking on other Superman titles and the Man of Steel makes an early appearance here in Naomi #1. The art is crafted by Jamal Campbell and it’s absolutely beautiful. It screams that “DC” art style while being bold and identifiable as his own. Jamal places Supes on a page and frames him as the humble warrior that he is. I melted.

Do I care about Naomi and if she has super powers or not? Or comes from some super hero bloodline? Not really. Naomi #1 is just the right amount of everything though. It has superb writing that speaks Millennial, much like the brilliant Stewart, Fletcher, and Babs’ BATGIRL. Nothing feels forced. Combine that with Reeds frame placement with character convoys, you have an engrossing book with relatable, likable, and memorable characters and events.
