Conan the Barbarian #1 (2019) Review. Birth on the Battlefield.

Conan the Barbarian is back! I love hearing those words, unless it’s from Hollywood in 2011 and includes the words “3D” after it. No this Conan is stampeding his way back to the pages of Marvel. Jason Aaron is joined by Mahmud Asrar to bring the towering Cimmerian back to life.

I’m no historian when it comes to Conan the Barbarian and Marvel but, I can search the internet. According to Wikipedia, Marvel hasn’t published a steady Conan book since the early 2000’s, so seeing the love he’s getting with three upcoming series is exciting. Those being Conan the Barbarian, Savage Sword of Conan, and an Age of Conan book titled “Belit”. It has pirates and sea monsters so it has my attention.

I love Conan the Barbarian, mostly because of the 1982 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. That and a short stent dabbling in the Age of Conan MMORPG which was shall we say, “not good”. So my knowledge of Conan lore is limited, but do you want to know who knows a shit ton about Conan? Jason Aaron.

We can safely say Conan is in the right hands. Conan the Barbarian #1 (2019) is as savage as it should be. It’s filled with brutal fights, witchcraft, and even some history. It spews Cimmerian rage and glory. This is also thanks to art coming from the talented Mahmud Asrar who fills each page, I mean FILLS each page with action. Conan is as savage as he’s ever been.

I’m excited to see where Aaron takes the Cimmerian gladiator. It’s peaked this curiosity of mine to discover and research more about the Conan fiction and lore. Stick around until the end of each Conan the Barbarian book for a short Tale of Conan novella from John C. Hocking. As of this review it’s already heading to 2nd printing so hurry down to Cosmic Comics! Las Vegas and snag your copy!
